My name is Thalia Delgado. I am a junior in college at the moment and majoring in psychology for a couple of reasons. I took therapy when I was younger around the age of nine or ten. I received so much help from therapists and I felt that I was helped and cared about that made me overcome what I was going through. Ever since then, I felt it inside me that I want to help others the way I was helped. Some of my interests are watching horror movies, working out and spending time with family. I was in first grade when I started to read certain books such as Dr.Seuss, The cat in the hat and No,David! I was curious while being in class, so I grabbed the Dr.Seuss book and started to read. My teacher helped me pronounce the words correctly and pronounce them slowly to have a better understanding. In school, my teacher was very supported and encouraged us to grab books more often to start learning more and read more. I also had support at home, where my parents would just watch me read and feel happy that I was starting to grab more books. From what I can remember, my earliest experience with literacy was in first grade but I feel that even in kindergarten with the kids book, I tried to pronounce some words by myself or with help of the people around me. I feel like the excitement and encouragement I had around me helped me be more open with reading or even attempting to at such a young age. My parents played a big role when I was younger because they would always tell me “hey grab a book” or “maybe you should read something” as a form of caring and wanting me to not be behind. I started to feel literature a little towards the end of kindergarten but a bit more while being in first grade. Back in elementary school, I used to enjoy activities where I would write over words where you connect it and then say the word after. I loved a kids book with a lot of images on each page to see the description of what is being said. I started speaking at home, started with spanish because of my parents but the little basics then later on english words once I started school. I used to do activities where I had to interact with other kids to do some drawings, or speak about what we notice around the class. Small activities that dealt with a lot of group interactions. One thing that used to frustrate me a lot was not being able to pronounce the words correctly. I felt like I repeated the word hundreds of times but still wasn’t able to get it right. My main role model was my parents who tried to read books with me even when at first they used to struggle with the language. Compared to years ago, I feel good about myself as a literate. I have made so much progress with the amount of books I read, being more confident about what I read whether it’s a book, article, journals, anything. I use literacy in my everyday life. I use it at work speaking with customers. while also being in college; i speak with my classmates/professors and write down notes and papers. Nowadays, my professors play a big role in my literacy life and also myself with the books I read etc.
